Meet Our Staff

About Us

Our teaching team at Highlands is one of the major reasons for our continued success. Dedicated professionals who enjoy their work, these individuals bring years of experience and learning to provide a caring and healthy preschool environment for your child.

We offer a ratio of supervision above standards set out by the Child Care Licensing Regulations. Our classes are staffed by two Licensed ECE (Early Childhood Educators) for every 17 children in each class of 3 and 4-year-old students. Our 2-year-old program provides 2 ECE teachers to each class of 8 children.

A PERSONAL NOTE FROM OUR TEACHERS:

As dedicated teachers at Highlands, our qualifications and experience provide the school with a vast range of expertise and knowledge in the early childhood field. Every teacher in the school holds a valid ECE teaching certificate and are trained in first aid. Some teachers hold additional qualifications, including degrees in Early Childhood Studies and Psychology. In addition to all of our existing qualifications we continue our professional development through courses and workshops throughout the year.

We all really enjoy working at Highlands and this is reflected in our continuous commitment to the school. In total our staff have 52 years of combined employment at Highlands Preschool, ranging from over 16 years to new teachers who are in their first year of joining our teaching team.

Due to our immense diversity, we collaborate to bring fresh ideas to the programs as well as tried and tested favourites. There is a high level of energy and we as teachers are constantly brain storming to provide your children with the best educational experience.

Here at Highlands we are privileged to provide our students with a rich ‘learning through play’ environment. Our program fosters children’s love of learning through building independence, curiosity, problem solving and thinking skills. One of the main reasons we enjoy teaching at Highlands is the flexibility to be creative and thoughtful in our teaching – to meet the needs of individuals and different groups of children by providing an open-ended, active learning environment. Children can speak about and develop their ideas, learn new vocabulary and skills, learn to listen and respect other people and really enjoy their learning. Our problem solving strategies allow children to take control of their own choices and be confident to try new experiences.

Highlands Preschool welcomes you.

Christine Hamel

Executive Director

I am originally from Montreal and moved to North Vancouver in 2000. In my spare time I enjoy engaging in sports and outdoor activities on the North Shore with my two boys.

I have had the honor of working in the Early Childhood Field for over 20 years as both an Early Childhood Educator and a Supervisor/Manager in a variety of different settings, including an early learning childcare centre, a non-profit parent participation preschool and a large multi-venue childcare provider.

I am very excited to join Highlands Preschool! There is such a sense of community within the families and the teachers. The children are so happy when the enter the preschool where they grow and learn through play. Highlands is very lucky to have such a dedicated group of educators who are passionate about learning along side with the children.

I feel so fortunate to be part of the wonderful teaching team at Highlands Preschool. I have been an Early Childhood Educator since 1989 and I have taught at Highlands since the year 2000. The Director, teachers and Board members are all dedicated to the school and it is such an amazing place to teach.

I was born and raised on the North Shore and have two adult children. Some of my interests include gardening, reading, walking, travelling and spending time with my family and friends.

I also enjoy watching the Vancouver Canucks, the Whitecaps and the BC Lions. My husband and I are very lucky to be able to go to some of the games to cheer our teams on.

The children I teach are an important part of my life.

Participating with them in their first learning experiences and seeing them grow brings fulfillment and continuing
satisfaction.

Mi Yeom

I am very excited to be part of the team at Highlands.
Since I was little, I’ve always dreamed to be a teacher. After finishing my studies in Early Childhood Education, I was able to make my dream come true. I’ve been working with children of different ages since 2009 focusing on each child’s individual needs, respecting their own pace, helping them improve their independence, and creating an environment so they can self-discover.

My experience of living in different countries has also taught me how to respect an inclusive environment, and gave me skills to teach multiple languages through songs.

In my spare time, I like to hike with my family, read, and watch my sons play. I look forward to being a part of your child’s first steps of learning at Highlands Preschool.

I have been working at Highlands since 2006.

I love being an ECE educator. It is great seeing the children grow in different areas of learning with my help as a teacher.

It's rewarding to see children grow through the year and see their confidence coming into school, ready to go.

I enjoy teaching at Highlands. The team has great communication with one another, making plans &
activities for the children to come out on top.

Out of school, I love spending time with my two children & husband having quality family time.

I am originally from Japan and have three children. I enjoy watching the children build self-esteem, confidence, friendships with each other and simply enjoying their play. My
goal is to make sure that each child receives the best care and love that they all deserve.

I have been proudly working in the ECE field and at Highlands Preschool since 2014.

I was always interested in working with children from a young age.

Being an Early Childhood Educator, I believe in helping to build the foundations of a child's life. My goal is to promote the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of each one of the children I teach.

If I can make a positive impact on a child, this will support them in the future. In my free time , I enjoy challenges, exploring new places and reading.

I have had the pleasure of teaching at Highlands Preschool since 2010. I thoroughly enjoy being part of an enthusiastic, hard working and caring team that we have here at Highlands.

I love to teach and get a great sense of fulfilment from seeing children's delight in their achievements.

I am originally from the UK and I worked as a kindergarten teacher in a school in Southampton for several years before moving to Canada. I have been in BC since 2008.

Outside of teaching I enjoy spending time with my family.

Hello everyone.

I was born and raised in India. As a mother of two wonderful boys, I had many opportunities to foster growth and development. There is nothing more gratifying than witnessing a young child learn something new.

It was this passion for nurturing my own children, which led me to complete my Montessori training in India and then Early Childhood Education in Vancouver.

I have been teaching on the North Shore since 2003. I am so excited to be teaching at Highlands Preschool. I bring enthusiasm to the school and I am so thankful to be part of these precious children’s lives. My goal is to have lots of fun and make it a wonderful experience for your little ones.

Rozina Jaffer

I have taught at Highlands Preschool since 2012.

I have BA Degree in Education, and the desire to teach has led me to have many teaching opportunities over the years in the UK, USA and Canada.

My passion to work closely with children in their early years and to learn more about their development, has led me to go back to school. I have a diploma in Early Childhood Education, a Certificate in Special Needs Education and a thirst to learn more.

I am looking forward to completing my ECE Degree soon.

I enjoy travelling, baking, and I love to sing and read.

Working at Highlands is a great pleasure. It gives me a sense of peace knowing that I am able to teach children in a nurturing environment, where they are engaged in learning through play. My colleagues and parents are warm, friendly and supportive. The children’s smiles, and excitement motivate me to follow my passion. Actively working with the 2, 3 and 4 year olds and watching them gain a sense of accomplishment and confidence is the best gift for me as a teacher. I hope to make a difference in the lives of all the children that cross my path.

I am excited to join Highlands Preschool and look forward to working with everyone over the next year. I have been fortunate to work in the early childhood field since 2012 and have found it very rewarding to learn along side the children. One aspect of learning I enjoy the most is exploring both art and nature activities, where the path of learning is endless.

I also enjoy spending time with my husband and 3 boys where we explore the beautiful North Shore with our 2 dogs and travel often to learn about other cities and places.
