High Scope Method

Children learn best by doing. Through active, hands-on involvement with people, materials, events and ideas, they construct knowledge that helps them make sense of their world. This is the central philosophy behind HighScope Learning. The HighScope Method is supported by a 40-year ongoing research study whose findings show that HighScope Learners develop:

* Improved social responsibility
* Improved self-esteem
* Improved cognitive and language skills
* Improved problem solving skills – six steps to conflict resolution

Our professional teachers are licensed Early Childhood Educators (ECE) and have trained under the HighScope method. They are widely respected for their creativity and knowledge of the individual needs of children.

Highlands Preschool is a non-profit society administered by a volunteer parent board of directors and a professional director. We have a dedicated and caring teaching staff and in our Two Year Old Program there are two teachers per class of eight children.

Highlands Preschool provides an excellent learning environment with fully equipped classrooms, a fenced playground with new equipment, as well as a large gymnasium for indoor play in rainy weather. Special events are planned for the children throughout the year. The Two Year Old Program will ensure that all the emotional, physical, social and intellectual needs of the children are addressed. There will be ample opportunity for child to child, and child to caregiver relationships to develop. We recognize how important and delicate this phase of any child’s development is and we enjoy working with this age group. (note: Children must be two years old by September 30, 2012, to be enrolled in the program.)

Children are provided a consistent and secure experience that promises interesting things to do, exposure to a variety of new materials and the attention of their teachers to their needs and interests. Our teaching teams construct the daily routine from the following segments:
